Geometry

This week we kicked off our study of geometry with a project using spaghetti. The students made 8 lengths of pasta and tried to try to construct different triangles. We then derived the rules of triangles.

Since vocabulary is a huge part of geometry, I am attaching a list of the "Words to Know". The list is also in the composition book.

Geometry Words to Know
Point
An exact location in space
Line
A series of points that extend in both directions without end
Ray
A series of points that extend in one direction and has one endpoint
Segment
A part of a line with two endpoints
Plane
A flat surface
Intersecting lines
Lines that have one point in common
Parallel lines
Lines in the same plane that never intersect
Perpendicular lines
Lines that intersect at a 90° angle
Skew lines
Lines that are on different planes so they can never intersect
Angle
Two rays with a common endpoint
Vertex
The point of intersection of two sides of an angle or figure
Acute angle
An angle that measures less than 90°
Right angle
An angle that measures exactly 90°
Obtuse angle
An angle that measures between 90° and 180°
Straight angle
An angle that measures exactly180°
Complementary angles
Two angles that add up to 90°
Supplementary angles
Two angles that add up to 180°
Adjacent angles
Two angles that share a vertex
Vertical angles
Angles formed by two intersecting lines that are opposite each other
Congruent angles
Angles with equal angle measures
Congruent sides
Sides that have the same measure
Scalene
No congruent sides (triangles)
Isosceles
Two congruent sides (triangle)
Equilateral
All sides congruent (triangles)
Polygon
A closed figure made of only line segments
Regular polygon
A polygon with all sides and angles congruent
Irregular polygon
A polygon with sides that are not all congruent
Circle
A set of points on a plane that are all equidistant from one point
Radius
The distance from the center of the circle to the outside
Diameter
The distance from one side of a circle to the other that goes through the cent
Arc
A part of the circle (the outside)
Semicircle
Half of a circle
Compass
A tool used to draw circles
Midpoint
A point the divides a line segment into two equal lengths
Segment bisector
A line, segment, or ray that does through the midpoint of a segment
Area
The amount of space inside a 2d figure
Perimeter
The distance around a polygon
Circumference
The distance around a circle
Volume
The amount of space inside a 3d figure
